Self-initiated Concept
Brand: Santa Cruz Bikes
Year: 2024
The Concept
This was a self-initiated project exploring what a next-generation retail environment could look like for Santa Cruz Bikes - a brand with a deeply passionate community and a strong cultural identity that rarely translates into its physical retail presence. The brief was set internally: how do you transform a bike store from a transactional space into a genuine brand destination?
The Challenge
Traditional bike retail tends to prioritise product density over experience - bikes hung wall to wall, accessories stacked high. The opportunity here was to ask a different question: what if the store was designed around the rider, not the product? The challenge was balancing commercial retail requirements (display, stock, purchase journey) with the kind of experiential warmth and community feel that makes people want to stay.
The Design
The concept reframes the store as an experiential brand hub built around three pillars - innovation, education, and community. The spatial plan organises the floorplate into distinct zones that guide visitors through a progressive journey: from product discovery and technical education through to community gathering spaces. Material and finish choices lean into a modern industrial aesthetic - satin metal, cool stone, and considered lighting that feels more like a high end tech studio than a shop floor. The floor plan was developed to a technical level, with circulation, zoning, and fixture placement all resolved.
My Role
Sole designer across the full project - from initial concept ideation and creative direction through to 3D design development, visualisation, spatial planning, material and finish specification, and technical development. The floor plan shown represents the project developed to a level of detail suitable for client presentation or contractor handover.
Why This Project
Speculative work at this level demonstrates the ability to self-direct, identify a creative opportunity, and develop it through to a resolved conclusion - without a client holding the brief.
